Sting (musician)

Sting, born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, was born on October 2, 1951, in Wallsend, Northumberland, England. He gained the nickname "Sting" from the black and yellow jersey he wore during his early performing days with jazz bands which made him resemble a bee. Before achieving fame as a musician, Sting worked as a primary school teacher and served as a tax officer.

In early 1977, Sting formed the band The Police with drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers. This marked the beginning of a highly successful career in music for Sting, as the band quickly gained popularity for their innovative sound which combined punk, reggae, and jazz influences. The Police went on to release several hit albums and singles, becoming one of the most successful bands of their time.

On November 2, 1983, The Police released their fifth and final studio album, 'Synchronicity,' which would become their most successful. The album featured the hit single "Every Breath You Take," which topped charts worldwide and won Grammy Awards. Sting released his debut solo studio album, 'The Dream of the Blue Turtles,' on June 4, 1985, following the disbandment of The Police. Sting made his Broadway debut with 'The Last Ship,' a musical inspired by his childhood experiences in a shipbuilding town. The show opened on June 24, 2014, and featured music and lyrics by Sting. Despite mixed reviews, it marked an important milestone in his career as it demonstrated his ability to bridge different artistic forms, from pop music to musical theater.

Sting released the collaborative album '44/876' with Jamaican musician Shaggy on April 20, 2018. The album combines reggae and pop influences, reflecting both artists' musical backgrounds. It was well-received, earning a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. '44/876' highlighted Sting's continued relevance in music by exploring new styles and collaborations.

On May 24, 2019, Sting released 'My Songs,' an album featuring re-imagined versions of his classic hits both from his time with The Police and his solo career.
