Stephen Shore

Stephen Shore was born on October 8, 1947, in New York City. He showed an early interest in photography, receiving his first 35mm camera at the age of six and learning darkroom techniques by the time he was nine. Shore’s early passion for photography led to a distinguished career in the field, making significant contributions to contemporary art and influencing the acceptance of color photography as a legitimate art form.

Stephen Shore achieved a significant milestone in his career on May 10, 1971, when he became the first living photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This exhibition featured his photographic work, marking a major recognition of photography as a valid art form during a time when it was yet to reach its full acceptance in the art world. In September 1972, Stephen Shore embarked on a cross-country road trip that resulted in the 'American Surfaces' series.
