On November 20, 2015, Pete Buttigieg, then mayor of South Bend, announced the formation of an exploratory committee to consider running for President of the United States. A catastrophic flood occurred in South Bend on June 10, 1970, caused by intense rainfall from a massive storm system. The flooding extensively damaged infrastructure, homes, and businesses. Recovery efforts mobilized the community, leading to improved flood control measures and city planning to mitigate future flood risks.

In 1963, the University of Notre Dame actively participated in efforts towards racial integration and inclusivity, opening its doors to more racially diverse groups of students. This initiative was part of broader civil rights efforts happening across the United States during that time. It contributed to increasing diversity and strengthening community relations in the South Bend area.

Founded in 1923, the South Bend Chocolate Company began as a small local confectionery producer and has grown into a large chocolate manufacturing and retail company. Known for its delicious chocolates and candies, the company remains a beloved local and national brand, contributing to South Bend's reputation as a culinary destination.

The Studebaker brothers, originally from Ohio, opened their first factory in South Bend in 1865. The factory initially produced wagons for farmers, miners, and the military before transitioning to automobile manufacturing in the 20th century. Studebaker became a major employer in South Bend, influencing the economy and socio-cultural landscape of the city.

In 1852, the town of South Bend was officially incorporated as a city. This incorporation allowed for a more structured municipal government and enabled further growth and development. The University of Notre Dame was founded on November 26, 1842, by Father Edward Sorin and his companions from the Congregation of Holy Cross. South Bend was founded on March 28, 1835. It was named for its location at the southmost bend of the St. Joseph River. In 1820, the first settler, Pierre Frieschutz Navarre, arrived in the South Bend area. Navarre was a fur trader who worked for the American Fur Company. He built a cabin in what is now South Bend, Indiana, which became a trading post for the local Potawatomi people. His arrival marked the beginning of the settlement that would grow into the city of South Bend.
