Okonedo was born on 11 August 1968 in London, the daughter of Joan (née Allman), a Jewish Pilates teacher who was born in the East End of London, and Henry Okonedo a British Nigerian who worked for the government

Early life

Okonedo grew up in the Chalkhill Estate, located in the London Borough of Brent's Wembley Park district. Her maternal grandparents, who spoke Yiddish, originated from Poland and Russia and emigrated to the UK. Okonedo was brought up in her mother's Jewish faith.

Career

Okonedo is a versatile actress who received training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She has appeared in various mediums including film, television, theatre, and audio drama, taking on notable roles such as Alison Cheney in Doctor Who and Tatiana Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda, for which she received an Academy Award nomination. She has also showcased her talent on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for her performance in A Raisin in the Sun, and has participated in BBC productions such as The Hollow Crown and The Wheel of Time.
