The Sharjah Publishing City was officially opened on March 19, 2018, as a free zone dedicated to the publishing and printing industries. The publishing city positions Sharjah as a global hub for the publishing industry, promoting cultural and literary exchanges on an international scale.

The Sharjah Innovation Park was launched on November 8, 2015, as a strategic initiative to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the emirate. This hub supports businesses, startups, and researchers by providing an environment conducive to technological advancement and creative thinking. Housing a range of industries, the park enhances Sharjah's economic diversification and competitiveness in the global market.

On November 5, 2014, UNESCO named Sharjah as the World Book Capital for the year 2019. This title was awarded to the emirate in recognition of its continuous efforts to promote reading and literacy through numerous cultural initiatives and events. The title is a testament to Sharjah's dedication to fostering a love for the written word among its diverse population and its commitment to advancing education and knowledge.

In 2009, Sharjah launched its first Light Festival, an initiative designed to celebrate the emirate's culture, heritage, and architecture. On May 15, 2004, the Sharjah International Airport completed its significant expansion project, enhancing its passenger and cargo handling capacities. The expansion included a new runway, taxiway, and upgraded terminal facilities to accommodate the growing demands of travelers and businesses in the region. This development positioned Sharjah as a key gateway for international travel and commerce in the UAE.

The Sharjah Art Museum was officially opened on February 10, 1998, featuring a wide collection of modern Arab artworks. The museum serves as a cultural focal point for local and international artists, promoting fine arts and artistic expression in the region. The Sharjah Biennial was inaugurated on April 15, 1993, as a platform for showcasing contemporary art from the Arab world and beyond. This international event occurs biennially and attracts artists, curators, and art enthusiasts from around the globe. It aims to foster cross-cultural exchange, dialogue, and understanding through artistic expression, establishing Sharjah as a leading center for cultural events.

The American University of Sharjah (AUS) was founded in 1987 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah. The university was established to provide high-quality education and to nurture a spirit of critical thinking and innovation. AUS is known for its diverse academic offerings and has positioned itself as a leading institution in the Middle East, attracting students from around the world.

On January 2, 1972, Sharjah joined the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a member emirate. This significant event marked Sharjah's transition from a British-protected Trucial State to a fully sovereign member of the UAE. The formation of the UAE included Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and four other emirates, creating a unified federation in the Arabian Peninsula.

The UAE National Day on December 2, 1971, marks the formal unification of the United Arab Emirates as an independent nation. Sharjah, along with six other emirates, entered into a union that transformed the region's political landscape. This pivotal event brought together Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and others under a single flag, laying the foundation for one of the most stable and economically vibrant nations in the Middle East.
