CZU Lightning Complex Fires
In August 2020, the CZU Lightning Complex fires erupted in Northern California, affecting Santa Cruz County among others. These fires were triggered by lightning strikes on August 16, causing extensive destruction across the region. The fire burned a total of 86,509 acres, destroyed 1,490 structures, and led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. It caused major disruptions to life in the region and significantly impacted California's natural resources and ecosystems.
