In August 2020, the CZU Lightning Complex fires erupted in Northern California, affecting Santa Cruz County among others. These fires were triggered by lightning strikes on August 16, causing extensive destruction across the region. The fire burned a total of 86,509 acres, destroyed 1,490 structures, and led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. It caused major disruptions to life in the region and significantly impacted California's natural resources and ecosystems.

The Loma Prieta earthquake, also known as the 'World Series earthquake,' struck the San Francisco Bay Area, including Santa Cruz, on October 17, 1989. It caused significant destruction in the area, particularly in Santa Cruz County. The quake measured 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale and resulted in the loss of 63 lives, nearly 4,000 injuries, and widespread property damage over $6 billion dollars. In Santa Cruz, numerous historic buildings were damaged or destroyed, including a part of the downtown area.

'Cannery Row,' a romantic drama film based on John Steinbeck's novel of the same name, was released on October 13, 1973. Although set in Monterey, the film had significant cultural ties to the region, including nearby Santa Cruz. The film highlighted the nostalgic representation of California's coastal communities and their historic industries, tapping into a broader cultural and historical interest in the area's evolution from marine industry hub to tourist destination.

The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) was officially opened on October 1, 1965. UCSC was established as part of the University of California system to fulfill the growing demand for higher education in the state of California. It was designed with an innovative model combining progressive and traditional approaches to education. The university is renowned for its beautiful campus set among the redwoods overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and has become a significant academic and cultural hub in Santa Cruz.

On December 25, 1941, Santa Cruz experienced a devastating flood that caused significant damage throughout the city and surrounding areas. Unusual heavy rainfall caused the San Lorenzo River to rise rapidly, flooding homes and businesses, and resulting in extensive property damage. This flood, known as the Christmas Flood, prompted significant changes to local flood management and infrastructure, leading to improved flood preparedness and the establishment of early warning systems.

The construction of the Waddell Bluffs section of California's iconic Highway 1 was completed on April 8, 1932. This section allowed the highway to traverse the breathtaking coastal scenery of the Big Sur region, providing a more accessible route between Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo counties. Highway 1 has since become one of the most scenic drives in the world, attracting countless tourists and serving as a crucial transportation link for the central California coast.

The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk first opened its doors on July 4, 1894, making it California's oldest surviving amusement park. Located along Monterey Bay, the Boardwalk quickly became an iconic destination for tourists due to its seaside attractions, including the historic Giant Dipper roller coaster. Over the years, it has become deeply ingrained in California's cultural landscape, hosting millions of visitors and earning a reputation as a classic California seaside amusement venue offering a mix of thrills and nostalgia.

The Santa Cruz County Fair was established on July 11, 1866, as a local event to showcase the agricultural and industrial products of Santa Cruz County. Over the years, it evolved into an annual tradition celebrated by the community. The fair has offered a variety of attractions, including livestock exhibitions, crafts, horticultural displays, and entertainment. It provides an important opportunity for the local community to celebrate its agricultural roots and maintain cultural traditions.

On February 18, 1850, Santa Cruz was incorporated as an official city under California state law. At that time, it was one of the first cities to incorporate in the state, shortly after California achieved statehood. This incorporation facilitated the town's development through structured governance and laid the foundation for modern municipal services and infrastructure. The city quickly grew as it attracted both new residents and business opportunities, transforming into a bustling community.

Mission Santa Cruz was officially established by Father Fermín Lasuén on September 25, 1791. This mission was the twelfth in the California Mission chain and was situated along the San Lorenzo River. The purpose of the mission was to convert local Native American populations to Christianity and integrate them into Spanish colonial society. The founding of the mission marked an important and transformative point in the history of the area, introducing European agricultural practices, architecture, and culture to the region.
