Puerto del Carmen

The eruption of the Timanfaya volcanoes, which led to the creation of the Timanfaya National Park, began in early September 1730. This was a significant geological event on the island of Lanzarote, where the town of Puerto del Carmen is located. The eruptions continued until 1736, considerably altering the landscape of the island and affecting human habitation.

In 1888, Volcán de la Corona, situated on Lanzarote, erupted. The eruption did not affect Puerto del Carmen directly but was of great geological interest. It shaped the surrounding regions and provided valuable data for volcanologists studying the volcanic activity of the island.

Puerto del Carmen, one of the primary tourist resorts on Lanzarote, was officially designated as a tourist area in 1974. The Timanfaya National Park was established in 1982. This national park, located on the island of Lanzarote where Puerto del Carmen is situated, is celebrated for its unique volcanic landscape formed during several volcanic eruptions that took place between 1730 and 1736. It attracts numerous visitors each year.

The environmental complex at Zonzamas, near Puerto del Carmen, underwent a significant expansion in 2000. This facility is crucial for waste management and environmental conservation on Lanzarote. It plays a pivotal role in promoting sustainable tourism practices by minimizing the environmental impact of waste from the island‘s visitors.

In 2002, several beaches in Puerto del Carmen were awarded the Blue Flag status. This program recognizes high environmental and quality standards on beaches. Achieving this status highlighted Puerto del Carmen’s commitment to maintaining pristine beach conditions, contributing to its reputation as a top beach destination in Lanzarote.

The expansion of Lanzarote Airport, completed in 2006, significantly increased the airport’s capacity to handle more international flights. This development was vital for supporting the growing tourism industry in Puerto del Carmen and the greater Lanzarote area by improving access for international travelers.

The opening of the Biosfera Plaza Shopping Center in 2011 marked a significant development in Puerto del Carmen’s commercial landscape. This shopping center provided both locals and tourists with a variety of shopping and entertainment options, enhancing the appeal of Puerto del Carmen as a comprehensive tourist destination.

In 2017, Puerto del Carmen implemented a series of water management improvements aimed at conserving water resources on the arid island of Lanzarote. This included updates to the local desalination plants and the development of new water recycling systems, helping to ensure a sustainable future for the island.

The introduction of an electric bus service in Puerto del Carmen in 2019 was a major step towards sustainable public transportation on the island. This service aimed to reduce carbon emissions and promote green tourism, providing an eco-friendly transport option for both tourists and residents.
