The environmental complex at Zonzamas, near Puerto del Carmen, underwent a significant expansion in 2000. This facility is crucial for waste management and environmental conservation on Lanzarote. The Timanfaya National Park was established in 1982. This national park, located on the island of Lanzarote where Puerto del Carmen is situated, is celebrated for its unique volcanic landscape formed during several volcanic eruptions that took place between 1730 and 1736. It attracts numerous visitors each year.

Puerto del Carmen, one of the primary tourist resorts on Lanzarote, was officially designated as a tourist area in 1974. The development was part of a broader effort to boost tourism in the Canary Islands, providing a tropical escape for European tourists with luxurious hotels, vibrant nightlife, and sandy beaches.
