In January 1999, the city of Plano, Texas, was recognized by multiple publications as one of the best cities in the United States for affordable housing. This accolade was due to the city’s efforts in providing a balanced mix of affordable and quality housing options for its residents. Plano's economic growth, coupled with sound urban planning strategies, has made it a desirable place to live and work, attracting a diverse population that continues to grow.

The Plano Balloon Festival was first held on August 30, 1981. Since then, it has become an annual tradition in the city, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The festival features hundreds of hot air balloons, various cultural performances, and community events. It has grown into one of the most highly anticipated events in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, celebrating both the city’s community spirit and its commitment to providing family-friendly entertainment.

In September 1961, the Plano Independent School District began to desegregate, in compliance with the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education. This process began with the integration of Douglass High School, the city's school for Black students, into the all-white Plano High School. Desegregation in Plano was part of a broader movement across the United States during the civil rights era to end racial segregation in public schools.

On March 23, 1881, the Houston and Central Texas Railway completed its extension to Plano, which greatly contributed to the city's growth.
