Niels Ryberg Finsen

Niels Ryberg Finsen was born on December 15, 1860, in Tórshavn on the Faroe Islands. He was born into a wealthy family, with his father Hannes Finsen being the amtmand (High Commissioner) of the Faroe Islands. The family moved to Iceland when Niels was four. Despite facing health challenges from a young age, he pursued a career in medicine which would eventually lead to significant contributions to the field of phototherapy.

In 1876, Niels Finsen moved to Denmark to pursue further education. He attended school in Herlufsholm, a prestigious boarding school, before attending the University of Copenhagen. Finsen's years in Denmark were formative, as he studied medicine and began forming the ideas that would lead to his pioneering work in phototherapy. His education laid the foundation for his scientific achievements.

In 1883, Niels Finsen faced academic difficulties and failed his examinations at the University of Copenhagen. This setback forced him to reconsider his approach to studies and future career. Niels Ryberg Finsen passed away on September 24, 1904, in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the age of 43. His death was due to Niemann-Pick disease, a chronic disease that affected his health for most of his life.
