In recognition of its importance as a tourist destination, Nerja was officially declared a Tourist Municipality of Andalusia in 2020. This designation helps promote Nerja’s cultural and natural attractions, including its beaches, the famous Balcón de Europa, and the renowned Nerja Caves, enhancing its appeal and provision of services for the millions of visitors it welcomes annually.

The Caves of Nerja celebrated the 70th anniversary since their discovery, a landmark event in the history of Nerja. The caves are famed for their prehistoric paintings and stunning stalactites. Discovered in 1959 by a group of young locals, they have since become a major tourist attraction. Special events and tours were organized to mark this significant milestone in Nerja's cultural calendar.

The new visitor center for the Caves of Nerja was inaugurated to enhance the experience for the thousands of tourists who visit each year. The center includes a museum, a shop, and numerous exhibits about the history and significance of the caves. It aims to provide deeper insights into the archaeological and natural heritage of the caves, which are one of Spain's major tourist attractions located in the province of Málaga.

The Balcón de Europa, one of the most iconic landmarks in Nerja, underwent a major renovation project to restore and preserve its beauty and structural integrity. Reopened in a grand ceremony, the project included the refurbishment of viewing points, benches, and gardens, ensuring the landmark continues to be a favorite among tourists and locals, providing breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Easter procession of Nerja Maro was chosen to be one of the events to be prominently featured in tourism promotions across Spain in 2016. Known for its unique blend of tradition, culture, and community spirit, the procession attracts thousands of visitors each year during the Easter celebrations, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and religious traditions of this Andalusian town.

Nerja inaugurated its Time Capsule initiative, designed to capture and preserve the town’s present for future generations. The capsule contains items and messages from residents reflecting the town's current culture and hopes for the future. It is set to be opened in 50 years, in 2065, offering a unique snapshot of Nerja’s life and development across time, fostering a sense of community legacy.

The International Music Festival held in Nerja brought together artists from all over the world, gathering significant attention and promoting cultural exchange. The festival featured a diverse range of musical genres, including classical, jazz, and contemporary music, attracting visitors and contributing to Nerja’s reputation as a vibrant center for arts and culture within the region.

The Nerja Museum was officially opened, providing a location for preserving and exhibiting artifacts and history of the area. The museum showcases Nerja's rich history, from prehistoric times to the present day, including displays on the Caves of Nerja and local cultural evolution. Its opening marked a significant step in the preservation and celebration of Nerja’s heritage.

Scientists discovered paintings in the Caves of Nerja believed to have been created by Neanderthals, dating back more than 42,000 years. This groundbreaking discovery was significant as it provided insight into early human life and culture, challenging previous assumptions about Neanderthal capabilities and their creative expressions, making Nerja a focal point for archaeological study.

Nerja celebrated 100 years since the birth of local composer José Antonio Gallego. Known for his contributions to Spanish music, a series of concerts and events were held in his honor, emphasizing his impact on the cultural landscape. The celebration highlighted the town’s long-standing tradition of fostering artistic talent and preserving the legacy of influential figures in its history.
