Wakaso represented Ghana in the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship, playing two matches before their group stage exit. He made his full international debut in October 2012 and went on to score his first goal in a friendly match. Wakaso was selected for Ghana's squads in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where he made notable contributions, including scoring in important matches.

Wakaso, born in Tamale, Northern Region, started his senior career at Ashanti Gold SC and later signed with Elche CF in Spain after moving abroad in 2008. He had a brief stint with Villarreal CF's B team before making his La Liga debut. Wakaso went on to play for several clubs, including RCD Espanyol, Rubin Kazan, Celtic, UD Las Palmas, Panathinaikos, Granada CF, and Alavés.

Alhassan, the younger brother of Wakaso, is a midfielder and a footballer who has primarily played in Portugal. Wakaso himself is a practicing Muslim, and in October 2018, he fortunately remained unharmed after being involved in a car accident while on his way to Bilbao's Loiu airport for a trip to Ghana.

On January 18, 2020, Wakaso made a move to Jiangsu Suning F.C. in the Chinese Super League. However, on April 12 of the subsequent year, he transferred to Shenzhen F.C. in China following the dissolution of his former team.
