On March 30, 1975, a powerful earthquake struck the Kangra region in Himachal Pradesh, affecting several parts of the state, including the popular tourist destination Manali. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.5 and caused significant damage to infrastructure and buildings in Manali and surrounding areas. The disaster resulted in loss of life and displacement of people, leaving a mark on the history of the region with lessons on disaster preparedness and management.

The Manali-Leh Highway, one of the highest motorable roads in the world, was launched in May 1995. This significant event marked an important milestone in road connectivity for the region, opening up Manali to easier access for tourists and trade activities. Crossing several high-altitude passes, the highway has enhanced the local economy by boosting tourism, allowing swift transport of goods, and fostering cultural exchange between regions. It also serves a strategic defense purpose for the Indian Army.

In July 2005, Manali experienced severe flooding due to heavy monsoon rains. The Beas River and its tributaries overflowed, causing landslides and damage to roads and buildings. Hundreds of tourists were stranded as key routes were blocked. The floods highlighted the need for better infrastructure and emergency response mechanisms in the hilly terrains of Manali, sparking initiatives to strengthen disaster management frameworks and improve early warning systems in the region.

The Rohtang Tunnel, later renamed the Atal Tunnel, saw significant construction progress in December 2010. This tunnel, located in the Eastern Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, connects Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti Valley. Working at high altitudes and through tough geological conditions, engineers celebrated a major breakthrough in freezing temperatures. On November 25, 2016, the Atal Tunnel near Manali was operationally opened for vehicular traffic. This engineering marvel, at an altitude of over 10,000 feet, is considered the longest high-altitude tunnel in the world. It provides all-weather connectivity between Manali and the Lahaul-Spiti Valley. The tunnel significantly reduces the distance between the two regions, enhancing economic activities, demonstrating India's infrastructural capabilities, and serving as a strategic asset for defense logistics.

The inaugural Manali-Atal Tunnel Cycling Event was held on September 15, 2018, promoting adventure sports and a healthy lifestyle while showcasing the picturesque surroundings of Manali. This event attracted cyclists from all over India and abroad who pedalled through challenging terrains, experiencing the stunning landscapes and fresh mountain air. The cycling event not only encouraged sports tourism but also emphasized environmental sustainability and the importance of preserving the region's natural beauty.

On October 3, 2020, the Atal Tunnel, also known as the Rohtang Tunnel, was formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India. This tunnel, which stretches over 9 kilometers, is a major infrastructural achievement, providing all-weather connectivity to remote regions north of Manali. It decreases the distance between Manali and Leh by approximately 46 kilometers, facilitating movement during adverse weather conditions, boosting tourism, and providing strategic advantages in the Indian Himalayan region.

The Winter Carnival held in Manali in December 2022 was a vibrant event showcasing the winter culture and traditions of Himachal Pradesh. Tourists from across the country visited Manali to witness the snow-covered landscapes, participate in winter sports, and enjoy cultural performances by local artists. The carnival included snow skiing competitions, Himachali folk dances, and a variety of stalls offering local cuisine and crafts, drawing attention to Manali as a premier winter destination in India.

In May 2023, Manali's Spring Fest attracted a large number of international tourists, celebrating the arrival of spring with vibrant floral displays, music performances, and artisanal craft exhibitions.
