Mahamudu Bawumia is a Ghanaian economist and former central banker who serves as the 5th Vice President of Ghana in the 4th Ghanaian Republic. He assumed office on 7 January 2017 as Vice President of Ghana

Parents

Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, father of Bawumia, was a teacher, lawyer, and politician who held several prominent roles in Ghanaian governments and received high national honors; he was a founding member of the Northern Peoples' Party, which later merged into the United Party, the precursor to the New Patriotic Party, and served as chairman of the Council of State during J. J. Rawlings' presidency in the 4th republic, and he was buried alongside his wife, Hajia Mariama Bawumia, in Kperiga after her death in 2021.

Early life and education

Mahamudu Bawumia is the twelfth child of his father's 18 children and the second child of his mother's five, attended schools in Tamale, Ghana, before pursuing his education in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a master's degree and a Ph.D. in Economics, specializing in Macroeconomics, International Economics, Development Economics, and Monetary Policy, and has numerous publications.

Career

Mahamudu Bawumia had an extensive career in academia and finance, working as a lecturer in London, serving as an economist at the International Monetary Fund, holding various positions at the Bank of Ghana, and contributing to significant policy initiatives such as inflation-targeting, banking sector reforms, and debt relief negotiations. He also had political involvement as a running mate in the 2008, 2012, and 2016 elections, and he filed his nomination for the New Patriotic Party's presidential primaries in 2024.

Philanthropy

Vice President Bawumia is recognized for his philanthropic efforts, including funding an ultramodern mosque in Prang, settling decades of land lease arrears for the Kumasi Central Mosque, and pledging a monthly stipend to support Psalm Adjeteyfio's rent and living expenses.
