He was the Minister of Information and Media Relations and the Minister of Youth and Sports under the John Dramani Mahama administration. He is currently the Member of Parliament representing Bawku Central constituency of the Upper East Region of Ghana in the 4th,6th and 7th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana

He received his education in Ghana, Nigeria, and the United States, attending Barewa College in Nigeria and obtaining a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Ghana, Legon, as well as a Master of Law degree from Harvard Law School; he served as the executive director of the Legal Resource Centre in Accra, and his older brother, Ayariga Hassan, was a presidential candidate for the People's National Convention in Ghana's 2012 General Elections.
