In 2002, Lions Clubs International reached a membership milestone of 1.4 million members globally. This achievement reflected the organization's broad appeal and its members' dedication to community service, making it one of the largest service organizations in the world.

The SightFirst program was launched by Lions Clubs International to combat preventable and reversible blindness. Through this initiative, Lions have worked to improve eye care services, conduct vision screenings, and support eye health education, significantly reducing blindness worldwide.

In 1987, Lions Clubs International amended its bylaws to allow women to join as members. This significant change opened the doors for women to participate fully in the organization's service activities, leading to greater diversity and inclusivity within the Lions community.

At the Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become 'knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.' This pivotal moment led to Lions Clubs' long-standing commitment to sight conservation and assistance to the visually impaired.

Lions Clubs International expanded beyond the United States for the first time by establishing a club in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. This marked the beginning of the organization's international growth, setting the stage for its presence in over 200 countries and territories worldwide.

Lions Clubs International was founded by Melvin Jones, a Chicago-based insurance agent, with the aim of creating an organization where business leaders could improve their communities. The first meeting was held in Chicago, Illinois, marking the beginning of what would become a global service organization.
