He was banned from football-related activities by FIFA, with the ban later reduced to 15 years after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in October 2020.

Nyantakyi, who was originally raised as a Christian, embraced Islam at the age of 47 and became a devout Muslim. His conversion occurred when his mother remarried a Muslim man during the 1970s. Nyantakyi is married to Christine-Marie Nyantakyi, and together they have two children.
