On June 22, 2019, Kiel celebrated the centennial of women's voting rights in Germany, holding events and exhibitions exploring the history and achievements of women in the region. This commemoration involved public lectures, art installations, and discussions, emphasizing the social progress and continued importance of gender equality.

On July 25, 2015, the University of Kiel inaugurated the new Kiel Botanical Gardens, a modern facility dedicated to the study and preservation of plant species. The gardens include various thematic sections and serve as a research facility, an educational resource, and a tourist attraction, advancing the city's scientific contributions.

The Kiel Canal, one of the world's busiest artificial waterways, underwent a major expansion that was officially inaugurated on May 1, 2005. This expansion was crucial for accommodating larger cargo ships and boosting trade efficiency between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, further enhancing Kiel's status as a key maritime gateway.

Queen Elizabeth II visited Kiel on June 13, 1982, during her official tour of West Germany. Kiel served as the host city for the sailing competitions of the 1972 Summer Olympics. From August 27, 1972, the event attracted sailing athletes from around the world, leveraging Kiel's excellent maritime facilities and strategic position. Kiel Week, today one of the largest sailing events in the world, had its modern inauguration in 1969. On September 18 of that year, the city hosted the reformed and modernized regatta that would draw international attention and competitors. In December 1945, the British military government established the modern state of Schleswig-Holstein, combining the regions of Schleswig and Holstein, with Kiel as the capital. This administrative change was part of the post-World War II territorial rearrangements that sought to stabilize Germany's borders and political structure after years of conflict.

On May 4, 1945, Kiel was liberated by British forces as World War II drew to a close in Europe. Following heavy bombing by Allied forces, the city's strategic importance as a naval base made it a target throughout the war. The liberation marked the end of Nazi control in Kiel and preceded the unconditional surrender of German forces in the region.

The Kiel mutiny was a major revolt by sailors of the Imperial German Navy on 3 November 1918. It marked a turning point in the concluding days of World War I as disillusioned sailors refused orders to engage in a final battle with the British Royal Navy. This revolt sparked uprisings in other cities, contributing significantly to the German Revolution and the eventual abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Kiel was founded on 5 February 1238. It was originally named Holstenstadt tom Kyle, indicating its roots in the Holstein region. The city was strategically located as a part of the Holy Roman Empire, initially serving as a vital port city along the Baltic Sea. Its strategic location made it an important trade and maritime city, particularly as part of the Hanseatic League.
