Kamloops

Fort Kamloops was established in 1812 as a fur trading post by the Pacific Fur Company, a subsidiary of the American Fur Company. Located at the junction of the North and South Thompson Rivers, it was originally a waystation for trappers heading into the interior of British Columbia, Canada. The fort was soon taken over by the North West Company and later the Hudson's Bay Company. As a significant trading location, it facilitated the exchange of furs and goods between the indigenous Secwepemc people and European traders, playing a vital role in the expansion of trade routes in Western Canada.

Kamloops was incorporated as a city on July 31, 1893. The incorporation marked the transition from a small settlement into an officially recognized municipality. The Kamloops Blazers hockey team was officially formed on September 21, 1996. On September 14, 2018, the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Cultural Centre was officially opened. This centre was developed to celebrate and preserve the rich history and traditions of the Secwépemc people, whose land Kamloops is situated on. The cultural centre serves as a community hub for education, cultural events, and traditional practices. It features exhibits on Secwépemc history, language, and art, providing a space for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to learn and engage with the culture. The opening of the centre was a pivotal moment in promoting cultural understanding and reconciliation within the region.

On May 27, 2021, the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation announced the discovery of 215 unmarked graves at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. This harrowing discovery brought renewed attention to the tragic legacy of residential schools in Canada, highlighting the systemic abuses faced by Indigenous children. The news prompted widespread national and international discussions about reconciliation and justice for Indigenous communities. The discovery further strengthened calls for investigations into other residential school sites and for acknowledgment and remembrance of the children who suffered in these institutions. The event marked a pivotal moment in Canada's ongoing journey towards reconciliation.
