Ghanaian dancehall queen
Grace Kaki Awo Ocansey popularly known as Kaakie was born March 28, 1991.
Despite her passion for music, Kaakie valued education and excelled academically. She attended St. Martin De Porres Basic School and later continued her education at Achimota School, where she was an active member of the Scripture Union. She holds a BSc Midwifery degree from the University of Ghana and earned her Master's degree from Anglia Ruskin University in 2019.
Kaakie's unique position as Ghana's first female act to take Dancehall to the international stage has not gone unnoticed. She remains the first female artist in Africa to win a Reggae/Dancehall award. Her ability to blend nursing with music sets her apart and serves as an inspiration for aspiring female artists in Africa.
Kaakie's passion for music began at a young age. Growing up, she immersed herself in various music genres and frequently performed karaoke versions of her favorite songs. Her talent and love for music were evident from the start, setting the stage for her future in the music industry.
While at the University, Kaakie seized an opportunity to participate in the reality show "Stars Of The Future." Although she faced an early eviction, this experience led her to meet the renowned Ghanaian Sound Engineer/Executive Producer, JMJ Baby. Through JMJ's label, Xtra Large Music, Kaakie signed her first record deal and began her professional music career.
Kaakie's exceptional talent and hard work have been recognized with numerous awards and nominations. She won the Reggae and Dancehall Artiste of the Year and New Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards in 2013. Additionally, she earned the Best Female Vocalist award at the BASS Awards the same year. Her nominations include the KORA Awards and the Ghana Music Awards.
Kaakie's music transcended borders, garnering international acclaim. Her debut single "Ewoo" became an instant hit, and she collaborated with notable Ghanaian acts like Samini and Stonebwoy. Sharing the stage with Jamaican singjay Mavado further solidified her international prominence.
In 2020, Kaakie celebrated her marriage in a traditional ceremony, marking another significant milestone in her personal life.
