Club career

Jonathan Mensah began his professional career at Ashanti Gold in Ghana before joining Free State Stars in South Africa. He then moved to Udinese in Italy but spent most of his time on loan at Granada in Spain. After a short spell at Evian in France, he signed with Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia before joining Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer (MLS). He later became the captain of Columbus Crew and led them to an MLS Cup victory. In 2021, he transferred to the San Jose Earthquakes.

Born in Accra, Jonathan began his professional career in Ghana, played for various clubs including Free State Stars, Granada, Evian, Anzhi Makhachkala, and Columbus Crew SC, while also representing Ghana in international tournaments such as the African Youth Championship, FIFA U-20 World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations, and the World Cup.

Jonathan made his debut for the Ghanaian international team at the 2009 African Youth Championship, helping them win the title, and later played in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup where Ghana emerged as champions; he also represented Ghana in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and continued to be a regular starter for the team, featuring in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations where Ghana reached the final but lost in a penalty shootout; however, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Jonathan is a devout Christian who reads Psalms before games and is friends with Christian Atsu and Odion Ighalo, and he launched the Jonathan Mensah Foundation in 2013 to provide support and donations to underprivileged institutions and orphanages, earning him the title of Columbus Crew Humanitarian of the Year in 2017.
