John Garamendi

On March 5, 2007, John Garamendi was inaugurated as the 46th Lieutenant Governor of California. During his tenure, he focused on education affordability, environmental protection, and economic development. As Lieutenant Governor, Garamendi served as the president of the state senate, a University of California regent, and a California State University trustee.

John Garamendi was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for California's 10th congressional district on November 3, 2009. He succeeded Ellen Tauscher. During his time in Congress, Garamendi focused on issues such as infrastructure, health care, and renewable energy. He became known for his advocacy for American manufacturing and policies to improve the lives of middle-class families.

Garamendi was re-elected to the House of Representatives for California's 3rd congressional district on November 6, 2012, following redistricting. His campaign focused on his record of public service and his commitment to veterans, education, and job creation. Garamendi has been a long-time proponent of modernizing infrastructure and strong supporter of educational initiatives.

On May 20, 2016, Congressman John Garamendi introduced the 'American Made Energy Act of 2016'. This legislation aimed to promote American energy independence by encouraging domestic production of renewable energy and supporting the development of new technologies. It underscored his dedication to creating jobs through sustainable practices and his commitment to reducing reliance on foreign oil.

In 2017, John Garamendi was appointed to the House Armed Services Committee. As a member of the committee, Garamendi has focused on issues pertaining to national security, the well-being of service members, and the defense budget. He has been an advocate for policies that enhance military readiness and cybersecurity, while also supporting measures to prevent wasteful spending in defense projects.

On September 14, 2018, John Garamendi received the James M. Fitzgerald Award for his outstanding leadership in advocating for the coast guard and maritime industries. This recognition highlighted his extensive work on maritime issues, including supporting the Merchant Marine and improving infrastructure for maritime commerce, reflecting his long-standing commitment to national and economic security through strong maritime policies.

On August 10, 2021, Garamendi played a significant role in the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. This comprehensive bill was designed to address the urgent need for revitalizing America's infrastructure, including roads, bridges, water systems, and broadband. Garamendi was pivotal in securing provisions that directly benefit California and promote economic development.

Garamendi's advocacy for veterans was underscored by the implementation of the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019 on February 21, 2022. This act extended benefits to veterans who served in the territorial waters of Vietnam and were exposed to Agent Orange. Garamendi’s work was crucial in ensuring these veterans received full access to the health care and disability benefits they deserved.

On March 9, 2023, Garamendi introduced legislation aimed at expanding the Sequoia National Park to enhance the preservation of its unique ecosystems and promote tourism. The proposal included measures to protect the giant sequoias and other vital habitats within the park. This reflects Garamendi's ongoing efforts towards environmental conservation and sustainable tourism development within California.

In June 2023, Garamendi became the co-chair of the American Seapower Caucus, which focuses on the critical role of sea power in national security. As co-chair, he advocates for strong maritime policies that support naval capabilities and the shipbuilding industry, underscoring the importance of maintaining a robust and competitive maritime sector in the face of global challenges.
