Joe Ghartey

Joe Ghartey was born in Takoradi, Ghana.He was raised and went to elementary and senior school in Takoradi. He continued his education by studying law at the University of Ghana, where he received his degree in 1986. Later, in 1988, he completed his studies at the Ghana School of Law to become a barrister at law.

Ghartey joined the New Patriotic Party in 1992, inspired by its values of freedom, democracy, human rights, rule of law, and private sector development. He served as Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Disciplinary Committee.

Ghartey completed his National Service as a legal officer for the Komenda Eguafo Abirem District Assembly in Ghana. He later joined the Sekondi law firm and Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co., co-founded by Nana Akufo-Addo. He co-founded Ghartey & Ghartey with his wife, Efua. He currently holds Senior Partner at the reputable law firm.

Joe Ghartey was chosen to represent Essikado-Ketan in Ghana's Western Region as a Member of Parliament (MP).He was former Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Minister of Railways Development, and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development were among the posts Ghartey held while serving as a member of parliament.

Ghartey was elevated to Attorney-General and Minister of Justice in a Ministerial reshuffle by President Kufuor, becoming the 20th Attorney-General and Minister of Justice in Ghana.

The NPP minority nominates Hon. Ghartey for Second Deputy Speaker in the 6th Parliament.

Joe Ghartey announced his candidacy as a New Patriotic Party presidential candidate in 2016 and now for the 2024 elections.

Joe Ghartey is married to Efua Ghartey, a lawyer and co-founder of Ghartey & Ghartey. Efua is the Chairperson of the Bible Society of Ghana and the International Board of the United Bible Societies. She is also president of the Greater Accra Ghana Bar Association and a member of the New Patriotic Party.
