Jide Kosoko was born into the prestigious Kosoko royal family of Lagos Island on January 12, 1954. Growing up in Ebute Metta, Lagos, he was inspired by the success of Hubert Ogunde, a prominent Nigerian actor and playwright. Encouraged by an acquaintance who was working with the Ifelodun traveling theatre troupe, Kosoko auditioned for a role in the television production "Makanjuola" at the age of 10. Impressed by his talent, he was selected for the role, marking the beginning of his acting journey.
Kosoko's thirst for knowledge led him to pursue a business administration degree at Yaba College of Technology. Later, at the age of 60, he furthered his education in Performing Arts at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State. These academic experiences provided him with a solid foundation for his multifaceted career in the arts.
Jide Kosoko's acting career has spanned several decades, showcasing his versatility in both English and Yoruba-language films. He gained initial recognition through his involvement with the Ifelodun traveling theatre troupe and the Awada Kerikeri group, where he performed alongside renowned artists such as Lanre Hassan, Oga Bello, and Sunday Omobolanle. In 1972, he took a significant step by establishing his own theatre troupe, the Jide Kosoko Theatre Company.
Kosoko's talent extended beyond acting as he ventured into production and direction. He wrote and produced films and stage plays, including notable works like "Asiri n la" in 1992 and Tunde Kelani's "Ti Oluwa Ni'Le Part 2." Some of his other remarkable works include "Nkan La" (1992), "Oro Nla" (1993), "The Figurine" (2009), "The Meeting" (2012), and "King of Boys" (2018). Kosoko has collaborated with esteemed actors and actresses such as Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Desmond Elliot, and Rita Dominic, leaving an indelible mark on the Nigerian film industry.
Jide Kosoko's exceptional contributions to Nigerian cinema have earned him numerous accolades. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the City People Movie Awards in 2017, and he received the Special Recognition Award at the same event in 2018. These awards serve as a testament to his significant impact on the Nigerian film industry and his enduring legacy.
In addition to his illustrious career, Jide Kosoko is also known for his personal life. He is married to two wives, Karimat and Henrietta, and is a proud father and grandfather. His children include popular Nollywood actresses Bidemi, Shola, Temilade, and Tunji, as well as Muyiwa and Tunde Kosoko.
