Jeff Merkley

Jeff Merkley was born in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, on October 24, 1956. He grew up in a working-class family in Roseburg, Oregon. His father, Darrell Philip Merkley, worked as a millwright, and his mother, Betty Lou, was a homemaker. This background in a modest household has informed his political and social viewpoints, emphasizing support for working-class families.

In January 1999, Jeff Merkley became the Oregon House Minority Leader. During his tenure, he worked on bipartisan initiatives aimed at improving healthcare and education within the state.
