Ixtapa

Ixtapa was founded after being chosen as one of the sites for FONATUR's project to develop tourist destinations in Mexico. Initially a coconut plantation and mangrove estuary, it was transformed into a resort area with a vision of pristine beaches and modern amenities designed to attract international tourists. This development is part of a broader initiative to boost tourism infrastructure in Mexico.

The government of Mexico established a national park near Ixtapa, which includes diverse ecosystems such as tropical forests and marine environments. This step was taken to preserve the natural beauty of the area and protect the local flora and fauna from the impact of increasing tourism. The park serves as a sanctuary for numerous species and offers opportunities for eco-tourism and sustainable recreational activities.

On March 18, 1991, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the region near Ixtapa. This natural disaster caused some structural damage to buildings but fortunately resulted in no casualties. The earthquake reminded planners and developers of the importance of considering seismic activity in construction practices and the need for earthquake-resistant infrastructure in tourist areas.

In October 2005, Hurricane Wilma, although primarily affecting areas further east, caused unsettled weather and rough seas near Ixtapa. Precautionary measures included temporary closures of beach facilities and advisories against marine activities. The event highlighted the potential impact of tropical storms on coastal resorts and the importance of emergency preparedness measures to protect tourists and local communities.

An ecological initiative was launched in 2011 near Ixtapa to protect sea turtle populations nesting along the beaches. In November 2013, Ixtapa was selected as the venue for an international tourism conference focusing on sustainable travel and development. This event underscores Ixtapa's role as a model for sustainable tourism practices in coastal destinations.

August 12, 2017, marked the inauguration of a new direct flight route from a major international airport to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. This development aimed to improve connectivity and bolster the local tourism economy by providing easier access for international visitors. The introduction of this route facilitated increased tourism reception, thereby boosting local businesses and hospitality sectors in the region.

A significant beach restoration project was completed in Ixtapa in April 2019, aimed at mitigating coastal erosion and enhancing beach quality for visitors. This project involved the replenishment of sand and the installation of water breaks. Such efforts are crucial for maintaining the appeal of Ixtapa's beaches, protecting local wildlife habitats, and ensuring the long-term viability of tourism-dependent economies in the area.
