Herbert Mensah was born in Kumasi, Ghana. His parents, who were both educators, raised him as the youngest of three children. Mensah excelled in both academics and athletics while attending the esteemed Achimota School in Accra.
One of Ghana's most prosperous football teams, Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC, named Herbert Mensah as its chief executive officer. Mensah turned the club into a business, and as a result, they were successful both on and off the field.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC was tragically affected when spectators died in a stampede at the Kumasi Sports Stadium. The event had a profound impact on Herbert Mensah, who resigned as CEO. In order to increase the security of football supporters in the nation, he later founded the Ghana Football Association.
