Afful, who was born in Tema, Ghana, spent his formative years in Nungua, located approximately 23 kilometers (14 miles) away; prior to embarking on his professional football career, he used to avidly watch the Ghana national team on television.

International career

Afful began his international career with the Ghanaian under-20 team, scoring a goal and making six appearances, and despite facing difficulties in securing a regular spot, he affirmed that his performance was not the reason for his lack of success in the junior national teams. He went on to debut for the senior national team at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, representing Ghana in subsequent tournaments including the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2014 FIFA World Cup; he also served as captain, participated in the 2015 and 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, but Ghana failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, and although he returned to the national team in 2018, he missed the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations due to an injury.

Afful, began his career at the Feyenoord Academy before joining Asante Kotoko on loan. He later played for Tunisian club Espérance de Tunis before moving to Major League Soccer (MLS) team Columbus Crew SC, where he won the MLS Cup in 2020.
