Education

Gifty attended Labone Senior High School and Mfantsiman Girls Secondary School for her sixth form education. She continued at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, obtaining an LLB and being called to the bar in 1990. She furthered her education by earning a master's degree in Conflict, Peace, and Security from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.

Career Highlights

Before entering politics, Ursula worked as a lawyer for Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co. law firm for ten years. She then transitioned to the telecommunications industry, serving as the Acting Managing Director at Western Telesystems (Westel) from September 2005 to May 2008. Subsequently, she held the position of Corporate and External Affairs Director at ZAIN Ghana from May 2008 to January 2009. Ursula has been a Managing Consultant with N. U. Consult Legal, Governance, and Gender Consultants. She has also been an Executive Member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ghana, former President of FIDA Ghana, former Vice President of the Africa Regional FIDA International, and a member of various legal associations.

Political Journey

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful entered politics in 2012 when she was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma West Constituency under the New Patriotic Party (NPP). She successfully retained her parliamentary seat in the 2016 and 2020 Ghanaian general elections, securing significant votes in both instances.

Minister for Communications

In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed Ursula as the Minister for Communications, a position she currently holds. As the Minister, she oversees the government's ICT infrastructure program, digitalization initiatives, and the expansion of e-government services.
