Flagstaff

Flagstaff, Arizona, was founded on July 4, 1855, by a group of settlers who created a makeshift flagpole out of a Ponderosa Pine tree to celebrate the occasion, hence the name. Originally discovered by surveyors crossing the region, Flagstaff's elevation and location along the route to California's gold fields made it a suitable stop for travelers. Over the years, it developed into a thriving railroad and lumber town, offering access to the natural and cultural landscapes of the Colorado Plateau.

In August 1894, Percival Lowell established Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, prompted by his interest in Mars and the possibility of life on other planets. He chose Flagstaff for its high altitude and clear skies, perfect for astronomical observations. The observatory has since played a crucial role in planetary science, including the discovery of Pluto by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. Today, it remains an active research facility and is open to the public for educational tours and stargazing programs.

On February 14, 1912, Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th state, marking a significant milestone in its political development. The Museum of Northern Arizona was officially opened to the public on July 1, 1935, in Flagstaff. Founded by a group of Flagstaff citizens led by Dr. Harold S. Colton, the museum was established to preserve and showcase the rich cultural heritage and natural history of the Colorado Plateau. In 1955, Flagstaff became an integral partner in the US Geological Survey's Moon Mapping effort. In 1973, Flagstaff earned the distinction of becoming the world's first International Dark Sky City. Recognizing the importance of preserving the night sky for astronomical research and stargazing, the city implemented innovative lighting ordinances to minimize light pollution. This initiative has made Flagstaff a model for other cities worldwide seeking to balance urban development with the need to protect natural nightscapes. The Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort, located near Flagstaff, officially opened in August 1988. Known for its diverse terrain and picturesque views, the resort attracts skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts from across the region. The Snowbowl is an important contributor to Flagstaff's economy, offering winter sports and recreational activities that bolster tourism. In May 2001, Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff unveiled its newest addition, the Discovery Channel Telescope. The telescope is a modern marvel, featuring cutting-edge technology that enables astronomers to explore the universe with unprecedented clarity and depth. It serves both research and public education purposes, enhancing Lowell Observatory's mission to advance astronomical science while engaging the community with interactive educational experiences that foster a love of the cosmos.

On August 21, 2017, Flagstaff hosted a series of events to celebrate and observe the solar eclipse that crossed the United States. With its pristine skies and astronomical heritage, Flagstaff was a popular location for eclipse viewing, attracting tourists, scientists, and amateur astronomers. The city organized multiple viewing stations, educational programs, and festivities, engaging the public in scientific exploration and celestial awe.
