Darrell Issa

Darrell Issa was born on November 1, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio. He would go on to become a prominent American businessman and Republican politician, best known for serving as the U.S. Representative for California's 49th congressional district from 2001 to 2019, and then again for the 50th congressional district starting in 2021. Issa's father was of Lebanese descent and his mother was of Czech and German ancestry.

Darrell Issa was elected to the United States House of Representatives on November 7, 2000. Representing California's 48th congressional district, which was later renumbered as the 49th district, Issa succeeded retiring Republican Representative Ron Packard. His campaign focused on a strong business background and a commitment to conservative principles, garnering significant support from his constituents.

In 2003, Darrell Issa played a crucial role in the recall effort against then-California Governor Gray Davis. On June 23, Issa announced his support for the recall and contributed $1.7 million to the cause, becoming a primary financial backer. His involvement was pivotal in collecting the necessary signatures to force a recall election, which ultimately led to Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming governor.

In March 2008, amidst the financial crisis, Darrell Issa strongly opposed the financial bailout plans being proposed in Congress. As a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Issa argued that the bailout would encourage bad behavior by financial institutions. Instead, he called for more stringent regulations and oversight to prevent future economic downturns.

On January 3, 2011, Darrell Issa became the chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. As chairman, Issa focused on investigating the Obama administration, launching numerous inquiries into various federal agencies. His tenure was marked by high-profile investigations into the Affordable Care Act, the Benghazi attack, and the Internal Revenue Service.

On June 28, 2012, Darrell Issa led the House of Representatives in a historic vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. The vote followed an investigation led by Issa's oversight committee into the Fast and Furious gun-running scandal. This marked the first time in history that a sitting U.S. Attorney General had been held in contempt by Congress.

On January 21, 2015, Darrell Issa's term as the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee came to an end due to term limits set by House Republicans. During his tenure, Issa was known for his aggressive oversight of the Obama administration, conducting countless hearings and investigations into federal agency operations, including healthcare reform and the Benghazi attacks.

On January 10, 2018, Darrell Issa announced that he would not seek reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives, marking the end of his political career after 18 years in Congress. On November 3, 2020, Darrell Issa was reelected to the United States House of Representatives, representing California's 50th congressional district.
