Daniel Amartey made his debut for the Ghana national under-20 football team in 2012 and played in the 2015 and 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, with Ghana finishing as runners-up in 2015 and being eliminated early in 2021, while also featuring in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations where Ghana finished fourth and he was named in the CAF Team of the tournament.

Amartey, originally scouted by Magnus Pehrsson, joined Djurgårdens IF as a teenager, impressing in the Swedish league and attracting interest from foreign clubs, before moving to F.C. Copenhagen and eventually joining Leicester City, where he played a key role in their Premier League title-winning season and continued to be a regular until his recent departure from the club.
