In March 2020, Curitiba launched a comprehensive smart city initiative aimed at leveraging technology to enhance urban living. The project focuses on improving traffic management, public safety, and environmental monitoring through the use of advanced data analytics and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, representing a significant step toward more intelligent and integrated city management.

In 2016, Curitiba was honored with the Global Green City Award for its leadership in developing sustainable cities. The city was praised for its innovative urban planning strategies, comprehensive green space development, and public transport systems that emphasize sustainability and environmental consciousness.

In June 2014, Curitiba was one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup. The matches were played at Arena da Baixada, one of Brazil's most modern stadiums. Hosting the World Cup was a major event for Curitiba, showcasing its infrastructure and cultural attractions to an international audience.

The Oscar Niemeyer Museum, dedicated to the work of the renowned Brazilian architect, was inaugurated in Curitiba in March 2003. In 1996, Curitiba was awarded the inaugural Globe Sustainable City Award for its innovative urban planning and sustainable development practices. The city's focus on environmental sustainability, efficient public transportation, and public parks set a global benchmark for other cities aiming to improve urban living conditions while minimizing ecological impact.

The Botanical Garden of Curitiba was inaugurated in 1989 and quickly became one of the city's most iconic landmarks. The garden features a stunning glasshouse inspired by the Crystal Palace in London, housing various tropical plants, and serves as a center for research, education, and preservation of flora.

Curitiba implemented its groundbreaking transportation system known as the Rede Integrada de Transporte (RIT) in 1971. The integrated, efficient bus system was a pioneering model of public transit, featuring dedicated lanes for buses that reduce traffic congestion and improve urban mobility. In 1853, the Province of Paraná was created, separating from São Paulo. Curitiba was chosen as the capital of the new province due to its strategic location and growing economic importance. Curitiba was officially founded on March 29, 1693, by Portuguese explorers as a small village. The name "Curitiba" comes from the indigenous Tupi-Guarani language and means "pine nut land," reflecting the area's abundance of Araucaria pines. Over the centuries, Curitiba grew from a village into a major city, becoming an important cultural and economic center in southern Brazil.
