Chris Hughton had a successful playing career at Tottenham Hotspur, transitioning from a winger to a left-back and winning multiple titles, including the FA Cup and UEFA Cup. Despite injuries and competition, he continued his career at West Ham United and Brentford, ultimately retiring in 1993 due to a knee injury.

Chris Hughton, with Irish and Ghanaian heritage, became the first mixed-race player to represent the Republic of Ireland, earning 53 caps from 1979 to 1991. He played in the UEFA Euro 1988 tournament and was part of the 1990 FIFA World Cup squad. Hughton scored his only international goal in a qualifying match for the 1982 World Cup. He was honored with a testimonial match in 1995 and later served as the assistant manager of the national team from 2003 to 2005 under Brian Kerr.
