The Battle of Hampton Roads, fought on March 8-9, 1862, in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, was the first meeting in combat of ironclad warships: the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia. Traditional wooden ships were proven obsolete, as the ironclads could withstand cannon fire that would have destroyed the wooden vessels. The Battle of Great Bridge was a small, yet significant engagement that took place during the American Revolutionary War in the Chesapeake region. On December 9, 1775, colonial forces under Colonel William Woodford defeated British troops led by Lord Dunmore in what is now Chesapeake, Virginia. This victory forced the British to abandon much of their control in Virginia and marked a turning point for colonial forces in the Commonwealth. It was a morale boost for American Patriots and led to the British evacuation of Norfolk.

The first General Assembly, which was the first representative legislative assembly in the New World, was convened by Governor George Yeardley at Jamestown, Virginia, in the Chesapeake area, on July 30, 1619. This assembly was significant as it marked the beginning of representative government in what would become the United States. Comprised of 22 elected representatives from 11 settlements, it set a precedent for the democratic institutions that would develop later.

The first permanent English colony in America was established at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Before the settlers reached Jamestown, they disembarked at Cape Henry in the Chesapeake Bay area. Led by Captain Christopher Newport, the 104 colonists landed on April 26, 1607, after a long three-month voyage across the Atlantic. This landing is significant as it marked the beginning of British colonial presence in the Americas. The colonists planted a cross and claimed the area as English territory.
