Samir is the brother of bantamweight boxer Issa Samir, serves as the team captain for Ghana's national team Black Bombers, and has achieved notable success in the welterweight division, including winning the African Championships in 2007. He had to jump two weight classes to light-heavyweight to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics due to weight restrictions.
