Asamoah Gyan began his professional career with Liberty Professionals FC, a Ghanaian club, in 2003. Gyan scored ten goals in sixteen appearances, which earned him a transfer to Italy's Serie A club Udinese.Gyan joined Udinese for a fee of €150,000 in 2003. However, he struggled to break into the first team and managed only one goal in ten appearances in his first spell at the club. He was loaned out to Modena in 2005, where he scored six goals in twenty appearances.
For the Ghanaian national team, Gyan has scored fifty-one goals in one hundred and nine appearances. He made his international debut at the age of 17 on 19 November, 2003. He represented Ghana in three World Cups (2006, 2010 and 2014) and was part of the Ghana team that reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
In 2008, Gyan moved to Stade Rennais on loan and later permanently. He scored fourteen goals in forty-eight league appearances in his first two season with the club. Gyan's performances attracted interest from other clubs, and he joined English Premier League side Sunderland in 2010.
Gyan joined Sunderland for a club-record £13 million fee in 2010. He scored ten goals in thirty-four league appearances in his first season with the club. Gyan's second season at Sunderland was cut short when he was loaned out to the UAE-based club Al-Ain. He scored 24 goals in 27 appearances during his loan spell, which helped Al-Ain win the UAE Arabian Gulf League.
Gyan's loan spell with Al-Ain ended, but he rejoined the club on a permanent deal in 2014. He helped Al-Ain win the UAE Arabian Gulf League and also won the UAE President's Cup with the club. Gyan scored 95 goals in 83 appearances for Al-Ain in all competitions.
Gyan played for Shanghai SIPG and scored seven goals in eleven appearances in 2015. It was then revealed that Gyan's weekly salary of £227,000 with his Chinese club instantly made him one of the world's best-paid football players.In 2017, Gyan signed a two-year contract with Kayserispor in the Turkish Süper Lig. He scored four goals in sixteen league appearances in his first season with the club. Gyan left Kayserispor in 2019 and joined the Indian Super League side Northeast United.
Asamoah Gyan announced his retirement from professional football on the 20th June, 2023 at the Afremximbank 30th Annual Meeting held at the Accra International Conference Center. With tears in his eyes, he thanked the teams and coaches who gave him the opportunity to showcase his talent.
