Early life

Karbo is from Lawra in Ghana's Upper West Region and is a member of the Dagaaba ethnic group. He was born in Tamale, the regional capital of Ghana's Northern Region, in the small hamlet of Jekarayili. Karbo, a member of the Abayifaa royal dynasty, was exposed to political activism from a young age. Abeifaa Karbo, his father, served as a founding member of the Northern People's Party and later was elected as the first representative for the Lawra-Nandom seat. He was a prominent voice during Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's harsh presidency of Ghana.

Karbo, a graduate of the University for Development Studies, holds a bachelor's degree in Integrated Development Studies. He became the Central Student Representative Council President in 2004 and has served as President of TESCON Navrongo Campus, University Students Association of Ghana, and National Union of Ghana Students. He earned a Masters degree in Economic Policy and International Business from the University of Birmingham in 2006.

Karbo joined the New Patriotic Party's national research team and later became Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's vice presidential campaign coordinator. He returned to the party after the 2008 elections and played a significant role in the communication unit. In 2012, he stepped down to run for the Lawra Constituency and returned as a deputy communications director.

Abayifaa Karbo won the NPP's nomination for the Ghanaian Parliament, unseating the incumbent Sampson Abu and Upper West Regional Minister Bede Ziedeng.

Karbo was appointed to the position of Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways in April 2017. At the Ministry of Roads and Highways, where he served as deputy minister, Karbo presided over the working group for the Sinohydro agreement, the largest infrastructure trade in Ghanaian history. Karbo has spoken repeatedly in favor of open collaborations to improve Ghana's road infrastructure.
