The late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (popularly known as Sir John) was a Ghanaian lawyer and politician.
Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie was born in the Ashanti Region. He was raised in the little hamlet of Apedwa, where he also went to elementary and high school. Due to his hard work and academic success, Afriyie was awarded a scholarship to study at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.
Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He subsequently began working as an engineer with the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation for a number of years.
Afriyie began practicing law on a private basis. He was made the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation's chief of legal services under the John Agyekum Kufour presidency. Later, he was forced to serve as the corporation's deputy chief executive officer.
Afriyie ran his company and participated actively in Ghanaian politics. He was the New Patriotic Party's general secretary. He came up short in his attempt to win a second term over Kwabena Agyapong.
Afriyie was chosen by President Nana Akuffo-Addo to lead the Forestry Commission. Many Ghanaians were shocked by his nomination because there had been several rumors linking him to the role of head of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. Afriyie's responsibility as the Forestry Commission's CEO was to manage the numerous government organizations that make up the commission's divisions.
After testing positive for COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana, he passed away in Accra. He passed away while seeking care at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
